While we can prepare for an advancing storm to the best of our abilities by boarding windows, moving exterior equipment inside, and stocking up on supplies, we cannot predict the impact it will have on our facilities. We provide some steps to take once the storm has cleared and it is safe to leave your residence.
- Understandably, facility managers are eager to assess damages after a hurricane. They are often the first ones back at the property, and therefore, at the highest risk of danger. It is imperative to be on the lookout for downed powerlines or trees and to stay clear of puddles that may be hiding debris. In the event of flood damage to your building, do not enter before first disconnecting all electrical power. A wet environment can increase the hazards of electrical shock. In the event of a power outage, make sure you’re operating your generator outside.
- Once you’ve taken the necessary safety precautions, you must then document all damages. You should have reviewed your insurance policy prior to the storm and have an idea of what is covered. Take extensive notes and photograph all damage, no matter how small! Do not begin cleaning or making repairs to your property prior to this step, as it could save you substantial money in the long-run.
- After you’ve thoroughly assessed and documented damages, you may then begin to make necessary repairs. Your facility maintenance company will assist in this process. ProFi Construction & Maintenance will remove window boards and sandbags, move equipment back outside, and clear your property of all debris. Our goal is to have you return to normal operations as swiftly as possible. In the event your property suffered any structural damage, we can assist in these repairs as well.
Communication is key throughout all phases of a hurricane. In fact, it is your best interest to over-communicate with your tenants and employees to ease uncertainty, as well as ensure their safety. Everyone should be informed of damages and kept updated on expected timelines for return.
